Blue Jean Baby

It's always challenging for me to get dressed in the morning. Here's why: I always sleep in until 10 minutes before I have to leave. Then, I always want to just throw on an outfit that's easy to put together but still looks chic. Even though the weather's warming up, I'm not ready for shorts (my legs haven't seen the sun or gym in a while... not pretty). Therefore, my go-to is usually jeans. It's always so hard for me to find jeans, though, and I haven't updated my jean collection in some time. I only like a few of my jeans and the rest stay hidden at the bottom of my drawer. So in the morning I'm stuck with either super dark wash skinnies, black skinnies, a classic bootcut, or brown skinny cords (if it's chilly). That's it. Talk about annoying. So I had a brilliant idea today when I couldn't decide between bootcut or skinny: BUY MORE JEANS! I'm bright, aren't I? Therefore, I've compiled a list of jeans that every woman should have in their wardrobe rotation and that I need to buy ASAP.

Skinny - I've already got a few pairs of these, but I want to add a nice classic wash to the mix. I love skinnies because they can go straight from day to night. I usually wear them during the day with flats, sandals, or wedges with casual tops. Then at night I switch over to platforms and add a blazer. Super simple. These are also the best type of jeans to tuck into boots because you don't have any extra fabric hanging out the top. The important thing with skinnies is to make sure you have a nice clean line all the way down. If they bunch at the ankle you end up looking short. If you really like a certain pair, buy multiples and have each hemmed for either flats or heels. Or, what I do with some pairs is just cuff them a little for the day and then roll them down at night. One pair, two ways! Also, the knees on skinnies can tend to stretch out from sitting and standing throughout the day, which can make your legs look weird. It's best to go for a jean that's fitted all the way throughout your entire leg to help avoid excess stretching (or to help disguise the stretch when it does happen. It's inevitable.)

White is huge this season, & these are already cropped to the perfect length

Straight - If you take a pair of jeans and fold the hem up to where the knee is & the width of the hem is equal to the width of the knee, you've got a pair of straight-leg jeans. These jeans are basically flattering on every shape and are a good choice if you like the look of a skinny but aren't brave enough to try it. Hemming these jeans to hit right at your ankle actually makes your leg look longer.

Bootcut - Bootcut jeans are flattering for everyone, especially if you're a girl with curves, because the slight flare at the bottom helps to balance out the curves in your hips. Make sure they're hemmed to the right length, though, because if they're too long the extra fabric ends up having the reverse effect - making you look big and short. That's never a good combo. These jeans can be worn with any type of heel, including boots. However, do not try to tuck these into your boots- the extra fabric around the calf will just stick out the top of the jean. That's never a look you want to try.

Boyfriend - The boyfriend jean is a great option for the warmer months when you want something super comfy to run around town in. They are a bit baggier and super casual, typically with the hems cuffed or rolled up. Because these jeans are so loose, its best to pair them with a more fitted or tailored top to rein in the look. Otherwise, you'll end up looking like a slob. I would wear sandals or flats with these during the day, but you can pair them with heels or wedges to dress them up a little and the added height can help to balance out the extra fabric in the jeans.

High-Waisted Wide Leg - The high-waisted, wide leg jean is back! Who doesn't love a '70s throwback? Ok, there are a few things best left in the '70s, but these are not a part of that group. I'm totally loving this style right now, I just haven't found the perfect pair for me. Make sure when you buy these jeans you leave them long and pair them with a super high heel or great wedge. These are great jeans to wear if you're shorter, because the long line of the jeans paired with a high heel creates the illusion of longer legs and a taller silhouette. You want the hem of these to literally skim the ground, but make sure you are not walking on them. I think these are best paired with a loose, blouse-y top tucked in.

Trouser - The trouser jean is a great option for work if you have a relaxed dress code. They tend to have a slightly higher rise and a tab closer rather than a button. They are basically the classic work pant made into denim. Because the hem will cover your shoes, you can wear these jeans with basically anything. I think these looks best in a darker denim because of the most work-appropriate silhouette. Tops can be very versatile with these too, ranging from casual tees on the weekend to a nice fitted button-down tucked in and a cardigan or blazer on top at work.
